Writing to Awaken: Touching the Shadow
A Four-Week Live Web Class
Tuesdays, December 12, 2017 – January 2, 2018
6:30 pm EST/3:30 pm PST
In this live four-week web class, Mark will guide you through the second module of his newly released book, Writing to Awaken: A Journey of Truth, Transformation, and Self-Discovery. In this module, “Touching the Shadow,” students will examine the off-limits part of the psyche where we hide material linked to shame and fear. The shadow includes not only “negative” aspects of self, but all too often our gifts, passion, and originality as well.
Using the Writing to Awaken process of self-inquiry and truth-telling, you will learn to touch the shadow without fear, reveal the “falsehoods of self,” and integrate those hidden parts of yourself with increased curiosity and courage.
For the past 35 years, in his work as a memoirist, journalist, and teacher, Mark has experienced firsthand what science is now proving beyond a doubt: That an expressive writing practice is good for both physical and mental health. Writing about personal thoughts and feelings for as little as 15 minutes a day strengthens the immune system, lowers stress levels, and decreases time spent in the hospital. According to one New Zealand study, physical wounds heal more quickly when we do expressive writing. “I’m continually amazed by the benefits of this practice,” Mark writes. “It truly changes people’s lives.”
For people who don’t know how to begin, or who would like guidance in developing their own writing practice, this web class is a great place to start. Mark will guide you through the Writing to Awaken process, answer your questions, and illustrate how this work is done in a coaching session during each web class. You’ll learn the fundamentals of self-inquiry and radical truth-telling on which Writing To Awaken is based. As Mark likes to say:
“When you tell the truth, your story changes.
When your story changes, your life is transformed.”
Students who take this course will learn:
- The fundamentals of radical truth-telling in writing
- To separate the storyteller from the story
- To use witness awareness to penetrate the surface of old stories that keep you stuck in the past
- To pull back the curtain on the psychological shadow, where so much of our power and wisdom is hidden
- To identify the falsehoods of self that cloud awareness and compromise authenticity
- To use writing as a path of self-discovery and personal realization

Mark often says that writing saved his life. When you do this practice, you will see why. Writing is a powerful spiritual practice that enables you to see through your own illusions and free yourself of false narratives. Like meditation, yoga, and prayer, it strengthens the “witness consciousness’ – what psychology calls metacognition – which allows us not to be trapped in our thoughts, or fooled by the story making mind. The self-understanding that comes from this work can inspire genuine transformation and awaken you to a more liberated, authentic, and meaningful life.

About Writing to Awaken:
We each have our own story, a personal myth constructed from the experiences of our lives. We use narratives to explain ourselves to the world, but our interpretations are subjective and changeable. The revelation that you are not your story; acknowledging a gap between the story we tell and the truth, is the first step to psychological and spiritual freedom. This is how awakening begins.
Writing to Awaken is an inspirational investigation of the self through expressive writing. You’ll be prompted to explore your own personal narrative—writing honestly about your deepest wounds, greatest challenges, hidden gifts, yearnings, and opportunities for growth—in order to discover a deeply authentic understanding of yourself and move toward a more liberated, truthful life.
