About the Work

During this immersive, transformational week, we will be exploring the theme of freedom in its many manifestations: emotional, spiritual, and creative. What keeps us from achieving our authentic potential? Where are we ambivalent or self-defeating in our lives? In what ways do we avoid (or fail) our own vision, due to fear, shame, or self-doubt? These are some of the questions we’ll be exploring together during Writing To Awaken: Authenticity and the Path of Freedom.

Writing To Awaken is an intimate exploration of personal identity through expressive writing. Using targeted questions, radical truth-telling, and self-inquiry, you will explore the narratives of your life, writing honestly about your greatest challenges, deepest yearnings, secret wounds, hidden gifts, and roads less traveled. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of your storytelling self and move toward a more liberated, authentic, and awakened life. Mark’s unique, compassionate teaching style creates a welcoming atmosphere for this deeply transformative work. Designed for writers of all levels, Writing To Awaken will prompt insight, spiritual wisdom, and fresh possibilities.

“When you tell the truth, your story changes.
When your story changes, your life is transformed.”

After settling in on Saturday, we’ll have a welcome reception and dinner. The retreat officially kicks off on Sunday afternoon with an opening session with Mark followed by a tour of Castiglione del Terziere, a privately owned castle filled with medieval books, art, relics, and other treasures. Here’s a short video peek from last year.

During the week, workshop sessions take place in the mornings and early afternoon. Late afternoons and evenings are reserved for local excursions, free time, and one-on-one meetings with Mark. Excursions are optional and will be planned taking weather, attendance, and availability into account.

Departure: The retreat ends after lunch on Friday, June 15. We will return to the Holiday Inn Express in Milan where rooms are reserved for attendees who have flights on Saturday, June 16. For those not needing a room, $75 will be deducted from your retreat fee. We will also provide drop off at the Villafranca-Bagnone train station for anyone continuing their stay in Italy or Europe. All attendees must either return to Milan with the group or plan to leave by train on Friday. Additional nights at the retreat site are not possible.

For those wishing to remain in Italy after the retreat, the beauty of Florence, Parma, Pisa, Genoa and the Cinque Terre are easy to get to as are Southern France and Monaco. Please contact us with any questions about the retreat.

We are very excited about our return to Il Giardino della Luna and look forward to sharing this unique and beautiful place with you.
