Writing To Awaken at Hollyhock

hollyhockI can’t wait to return to Hollyhock in August for WRITING TO AWAKEN: Memoir As A Path of Transformation. Cortes Island is one of my favorite places and Hollyhock is a unique center for learning and creative exploration. The retreat will give me a chance to spend a good deal of one on one time with students in the splendor of the Pacific Northwest. Have a look at this video about Hollyhock to get more acquainted. I hope to see you there!

Writing To Awaken at the Rowe Center

Rowe CenterI’m delighted to be teaching Writing To Awaken: Memoir as a Path of Transformation a the Rowe Center from April 1 – 3. Tucked away in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, this renowned historic center offers the charm only found in New England. The magnificence of Spring will be our backdrop as we investigate the connection between the person you believe yourself to be and the internal witness who sees beyond the conscious mind. I hope you can join me. More info and registration.

New Video: The Situation and the Story

zayaI enjoyed doing this video interview with Zaya Benazzo in San Francisco.  She asked me to talk about the difference between situation and story when writing memoir, and why it’s so important to connect the dots — to find the deep story — in order to touch on the universal.  “If you go profoundly enough and truthfully enough into your deep experience it does become the human experience,” I told her.  Situation is journalism, story has the beginnings of art.
