Writing to Awaken at the New York Open Center

I’m looking forward to my one-day workshop, Writing To Awaken: Memoir as a Spiritual Practice, at the New York Open Center on Sunday, April 28. I hope you can join me.

We will spend the day exploring personal stories as pathways to wisdom and self-encounter. When we learn to see the mythic dimension of our struggles, losses, triumphs, and transformations, we gain insight into our spiritual progress — the state of our soul — and what is asking for deeper attention. Writing Your Future Story Online Class

Join me for Writing Your Future Story: A Six-Week Course in Vision and Imagination from July 1 – August 11. Every life is a work of the imagination. We create our own futures, imagine ourselves forward in time, through the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, who we’re not, what is possible, and what can never be.

In this imaginative course on self-reinvention, you will have the opportunity to explore new story lines for the year ahead, including fresh possibilities, surprising shifts, and novel ways of expanding — and improving, your future life. More info and registration.

“Learning To See”: Advice For New Memoirists

Random House asked me to write an essay on memoir for their e-zine, Signature Reads. I focused on atmosphere as the most enduring quality of a well-made story (more important than plot by far). I’d love to know what you think!

Writing To Awaken at Esalen

DSC02222I had a great group at Esalen for this year’s Writing To Awaken Workshop. Forty-five participants in the brand new Aldous Huxley room above the newly refurbished main building, and what a group it was! The intimacy, trust, and mutual respect that can form among a group of total strangers in a weekend’s time never ceases to amaze me. Folks wrote on a variety of topics — “The Mother’s Gaze,” “Awakening Genius,” “Locating the Sacred in Everyday Life” — challenging subjects that helped them break new ground, psychologically and spiritually, sharing their writing and experiences with the larger group. Thanks everyone for your commitment, creativity, and courage! I hope that our paths cross again soon.

Writing To Awaken at Hollyhock

DSC02220It was a pleasure to return to Hollyhock this summer to teach Writing To Awaken. This year’s group was inspiring and wonderful, as was Cortes Island itself. This small island off the coast of British Columbia is home to a fascinating community of artists, seekers, and cultural icon who spend time in this exquisite, peaceful place. One night, Rupert Sheldrake, the famed biologist and author, was interviewed by a well-known priest on the subject of “Pilgrimage in Contemporary Life.” Another day, our friends Chloe Goodchild (“The Naked Voice”) and Oriane Lee Johnston invited us on a boat trip on the beautiful sailboat, Misty Isles. Hollyhock is a superb location to do deep writing and I look forward to returning against next August.
